Great 1st Sander.
I did extensive reviews and narrowed it down to the Bosch brands and this Makita. Initially I was looking to get a belt sander, but many people were suggesting random orbital sanders, so I decided this would be a more versatile sander for what I expect my future DIY needs to be. It is smaller than I expected but this is the size of these sanders. It comes in a great solid sturdy case, but be careful as I kept pinching my fingers when trying to close it. The cord is long enough to be a couple feet from the socket when working, but you will need an extension cord for most work. The dust bag is small and similar in size to other brands. The only problem is that there is not conversion kit included to hook up to a vacuum. I just put the hose of my Rigid vacuum near where I was sanding. The additional grip was very easy to install, is positional on a horizontal plane and is easily removed. The random orbital action seems to significantly decrease the possibility of over sanding and burning the wood. In any event the risk seemed much less than a belt sander. Also from reviews of belt sanders, there seems to be less risks and problems when using this type of sander. This also has a variable speed switch from 1-5. The instructions give you guidelines for what speeds to use for certain jobs. There is also a button you can push that allows you to take your finger off the trigger, like cruise control. Just pull on the trigger and it releases the button and gives you manual control. If you use the cruise button, you can very comfortably sand with one hand on the top of the machine. You could just use the trigger grip, or you could use the trigger grip and the removable handle. It is well designed for comfort and to decrease fatigue. There is very little transferred motion to your hand and this means the sander does the shaking and not you.I purchased the Mirka 23-615-AP 5-Inch 8-Hole Assorted Grit Dustless Hook-and-Loop Sanding Disks with the sander. I used the 80 grit disk to level out some plywood sub-floor before putting down some laminate. The sander was quiet, amazingly powerful, easy to manage with one hand, and relatively clean. It was great to have the “hook and loop” method to attach the disks so that I can either reuse them or easily switch out disks when going from a heavy grit down to a fine grit. The disk was very easy to install and was about 1/8-1/4 inch in diameter larger than the sanding base. The lip seemed to dissolve away during sanding and this may have been part of my inexperience using it. The sander quickly dispatched of the job. The bag was half filled when I finished and I vacuumed it clean. Almost all of the dust gets sucked up through the eight holes in the disk and I did not notice dust coming away from the circumference, but I also had the vacuum on. The holes did not get clogged up during my job. The disk held as if it were glued. Most of the sanding was initially done with very little pressure. With a little pressure the work goes very quickly.I’m overall very satisfied with this. This is a solid and well built feeling machine; not cheap and plastic feeling. I’m looking forward to using this on small jobs I previously used hand sandpaper for. I don’t think I will be hand sanding much in the future.

Well thought out
I have owned sanders in the past. This Makita replaced a Rigid that failed due to a design flaw. It was so loud and vibrated so much, I simply looked for another brand instead of getting it fixed thought their lifetime agreement. Low vibration vibration transfer. Perfect balance. Switch is recessed, accessible and awesome variation of speeds. Handle is so nice. More power than needed. I am very impressed. My only gripe is the dust collection is average. Fine dust escapes the bag. Nothing a vacuum attachment can’t fix. Money well spent. One of the nicest wood working tools I have owned in over 30 years.

Best Palm Sander I Have Every Used
Makita has a top reputation for a reason. It’s a bit more expensive than similar products by other brands, but this sander is fantastic. By comparison to others I have used for years, this one is lightweight, well-balanced and maneuverable, and even relatively quiet. Some sanders you really have to fight against to maintain control, but this Makita is more like working on an air-hockey table! I finished my first project with it in half the time I normally would, simply because of the control and efficiency of the sander. Dust collection bag works amazingly well (again, especially compared to other brands I have used). You can squeeze a substantial stack of sanding discs in with the case (I put 80 of them in there). Well worth the money, and I was amazed to get it delivered the next day!

Makita !
Had to replace an old square palm sander I had for years. I needed a vacuum port on the tool to sand a ceiling in the house we live in, so ordered this one, due to my past success with Makita tools. It is fantastic ! Ordered a 20′ generic hose to go with it and attached it to my shop vac, worked perfect ! No dust.

Excellent product
You will never beat Makita tools and you’ll never regret a purchase. Both of Makita’s 5″ ROS sanders are excellent performers and pack power with a 3 amp but I prefer the 5030 ROS without the variable speed; those are my absolute go-to units. The 5041’s are great but I don’t care for the rear handle and they seem to go through brushes faster than the 5030’s. That being said, I do need the VS on some hardwoods so I always keep a couple 5041’s around. The noise, control and vibration are much better on these than the other manufacturers sanders (and I have them all). Always use quality replacement pads (not necessarily OEM’s) and paper; don’t waste your cash on cheap products especially with H&L sandpaper. Los Endos

Nice orbit sander, really like the trigger handle for ergonomic options
After having issues with my Ridgid orbit sander, I wanted something a little bit nicer as a replacement as I’ve been doing a lot more woodworking projects lately and noticed the ergonomics on the other sander weren’t great for longer work periods. This one is more versatile, with the same ‘top palm grip’ as my other one but also the trigger handle and adjustable knob option. I find myself using the trigger handle for quick touch up jobs, or as a change of pace when doing a larger panel, and it’s really helped my wrists by being able to change positions throughout. It’s also a good sander in it’s own right. My only initial concern was that I was easily able to hook up a shopVac to my Ridgid sanders, but this one has a very small dust port and no easily available adapter to convert it. But I’ve found it’s actually pretty good at forcing sawdust into the small bag, so I haven’t missed the vacuum option as much as I thought I might. The bag is smallish but takes about an hour of sanding to fill up most times which I think is pretty reasonable to take a break and empty it out every once in a while when you feel it getting full.Overall, it’s my first Makita tool after watching my grandfather use them for many years, and I’ve been impressed so far by the quality and features at this price point.

Very Quiet, powerful, good dust collection
I bought this to replace a DeWalt 5″ model I purchased in 1990’s. This sander is much better. The noise level is much less than any other sander I have. On speed 4 or less, you could use it all day without needing hearing protection. At about 3.5 speed, you can start to hear the sound of sandpaper rubbing against the wood or paint, since the sander is so quiet it doesn’t mask it. Removal rate is good, much better than the old DeWalt. Although I suggest using the Makita hose (which is expensive at $30 but worth it) with a shop vac, the sander does a good job of dust collection with just the supplied bag.The pistol grip was interesting – I have found it is pretty useful and does not take long to get accustomed to. It is faster to pick up and use than the traditional style sander with a rocker switch – it’s just like using a drill. Since your hand is pretty far from the sanding surface and off the center axis of the sander when using the grip, at some speeds you may experience some initial wobble in the sander if the sanding disc is not held parallel to the surface. I got used to this quickly.I purchased this model over the new low profile models from other manufacturers since they have some poor reviews. I like the 5″ size since it is easy to maneuver and don’t feel a 6″ model would help. On the other hand, I have held but not used a Mirka sander and if I were willing to spend $500, I would try that one just because of the weight and low center of gravity.Currently, I use this for finish sanding of wood and finishes with 80-320 grits. The manual does say on low speed that you can use it for polishing.
