DJV181Z 18V Li-ion LXT Brushless Jigsaw – No batteries included
Barrel handle type cordless jig saw
The Makita DJV181Z 18V Li-Ion LXT is a cordless jigsaw powered by 18V Li-ion battery (not included) with brushless motor to deliver up to 3,500 rpm, 390 watt maximum output. The variable speed control dial enables the user to match the speed to the application for optimal cutting performance in a variety of materials. Tool-less blade clamp for easy blade attachment and removal, change lever for 3 orbital settings plus straight cutting for use in a wide range of materials and bevel cuts to 45 degrees right and left and positive stops at 90 degrees for solid cutting performance.
The DJV181Z has a “soft no load” function, it automatically reduces the motor speed during idling to suppress the vibration of the machine body. Electronic push button switch, including lock off button is located on both sides of the housing.
The dust nozzle can be attached for connection to a Makita vacuum cleaner.

This jigsaw is so smooth/powerful and accurate. Nice balance and the auto speed/torque control is very good. It’s cuts perfectly square straight out the box. Dust extraction is excellent too, when hooked up to a extractor, although the noise is horrible due to the shape of the hole. This is my first barrel grip jigsaw but after only the 2nd or 3rd cut it feels very natural. I even prefer this jigsaw to the festool 18v jigsaw.

As a carpenter I am extremely pleased with my purchase.I have used many makes and models of jigsaw’s and this barrel grip suits me perfect. I find it very similar to the festool jigsaw which is about 3x the price. (All though I won’t knock the festool) The slow start to get the cut started and work light make easy work of any scribing/trimming, with very nice, easy control and precision. One happy chippy. Great value for money.

Yes it’s not cheap, but when you use it you realise why. Impressive bit of kit. Some people commented on it being too heavy, but it feels OK to me, even with the battery in. Worth the extra over a cheaper model, especially if you’re already using the Makita 18v range.

The Jigsaw provided powerful and controllable cutting easy to control giving good accurate cuts, found the on off buttons on the side difficult to use when using one handed, ie holding wood with other hand, it was difficult to turn off the power otherwise a good tool.

Cuts very well, easy to maintain direction, dust extraction works well. The worst thing is the button operated start/stop for which you need both hands or very long fingers. In standard jigsaws if you release the grip it stops and with this one – not the case – it just keeps on going. You need to be extra careful with it as it will keep on working if you drop it and you will not be able to stop it quickly in case of a mishap.

After always trying to use any other tool but the jigsaw in the past this is now going to be my goto tool when notching out for pipes and doing scribes. Not having to hold down two buttons to start it and not having to constantly hold down the trigger is a game changer, it gives you the freedom to hold it in position and move to a more comfortable position to complete the cut. The soft start until under load takes a few times to get used too but it does allow you to be more accurate

A good bit of kit but if you have small hands you may find it uncomfortable. For me it’s fine and I like it.

Easy to use with this style of handle. Glad I purchased this. Only slight dislike is the soft start. It can suddenly take you by surprise and run away from you
Dave –
The jigsaw cuts well and is well made but the push buttons on the side are so badly positioned. The lock function times out so quickly you have to push both buttons to start it almost every time and when you do happen to be quick enough I invariably re-engage the lock by accident as I have got in the habit of having to press it first! Also the lack of a variable speed trigger does not allow a gentle start to the cut. The speed control is on the back of the handle so it isn’t easy to adjust this in use. Mechanics 9/10, ergonomics 2/10.

Reviewing as I could not find a good review/ discussion on whether this newer format is better or worse than the classic D shaped version of the same tool. After a full day of work (fencing) at the weekend I can see that the D version may be easier to operate for some tasks. Generally you need to use both hands to get this tool working – with the tool in your right hand you will need to reach across with the left and hit two buttons in sequence to get it to run. There is no trigger under your finger to run it immediately. If the item you are working on is already in position under your left hand, and is likely to fall or move if you take your hand off it, then you have a problem. So if you are planning a very many individual cuts, where accuracy is not too important, having the trigger under your finger is more important, and that’s the critical difference between the two formats. If you plan to work a lot with sheets of ply or boards then and make long accurate cuts this version with a lower centre of gravity will provide more control and comfort.
