I bought this saw, used it a few times but decided it was definitely overkill for what I needed. Although I did think it should have come with a makcase. The price I think is fair. What I didn’t want was to have another tool just sat around doing nothing, it has to earn its keep you see.If you’re going to buy this though, I would definitely recommend buying the track as well because this beauty has a real kick and has a tendency to go off line due to the amount of power it has…..100mm depth, no problems 😊

I have no hesitation in recommending this for the price if you want a BIG saw that will cut through 100 mm thick wood -but be aware it’s a brute! This is quite wordy –sorry- but as there are no other Amazon reviews I have droned on. Safety warning at end if you don’t want to read the rest! 2022 update also at end.The information on Amazon is not that great and I had to scour the internet to get some of the specs, and more to the point, work out the difference (apart from huge price) between this and Makita’s other 270mm saw –the 5103R. The 5103R is available, and is on Amazon in the UK through third party sellers but I think it’s basically a newer model that Makita has decided not to sell in the UK just yet (2022 -I think Makita are themselves now distributing the 5103R in the UK).From what I can see, they are essentially the same spec in terms of the basic job (depth of cut, motor size, capability etc.) but the 5103 is just a bit more sophisticated. The one thing I don’t understand is the weight difference:Amazon lists this 5103 as being 12.54 kg (which I can’t believe it is –it must be the packed weight) and the HSO600 as 6.9kg (which it definitely isn’t). January 2022 -Listing for the 5103 now says 9.3kg.Unboxed, and without the rip fence or dust port I can confirm that the HSO600 weighs in at 7.9kg (or 7.5kg with the cord held off the scale). I believe these scales to be accurate so where they got the 6.9 from who knows. For reasons I cannot fathom, the more modern 5103 is about 2kg heavier –the 600 has a pressed aluminum base plate and magnesium blade case and I don’t know what the 5103 is so maybe they saved money on the on these items? The weights quoted on different sites are all over the place but the 5103 is consistently listed as heavier.Reasons to pay £500 for the 5103: It’s slightly more ergonomic, has a riving knife, and has soft start and a blade break. I think all three of these things are worth having but are at considerable additional cost (was over £300 extra at the time but the prices have converged a bit since.Reasons to buy the HSO600: it’s lighter, it’s cheaper.BTW, the price difference seems to match up in different markets e.g. the US 120v versions seem to both be available and maintain a similar price differential.Couple of things about the HSO600.It has a real kick to it. The first time it nearly jumped out of my hands (seriously). That 2 kilowatts comes on in an instant and even when you’re expecting it it feels like it’s going to rip the handle out of your grip so be careful. The handle is also made from very had plastic and is quite squared-off making it more difficult to get a decent grip. If you are going to be using this all day every day the extra £300 for the newer version is probably worth it.Different to picture: ALL the pictures of this model show a chunky blade guard leaver that extends round the back of the blade cover. Apparently this is only available in some markets -this version only has a tiny one. The difference being that you have to reach with your non-trigger hand right in towards the center of the blade for it. It’s then impossible, should you need to, to hold the blade guard up while simultaneously holding the front handle. Given the kick this thing has, I consider holding that front handle when you pull the trigger important for safety. Holding the guard up and not having a firm grip on both handles feels like an accident waiting to happen (a horrific one at that) –why Makita???Also, no riving knife to prevent kick back. I suspect the mass of this thing helps prevent it from throwing itself out of the cut but once it has momentum I imagine no stopping it.This feels like it will cut through oak for the rest of my life but I suspect the design has been around for 30 or more years and safety considerations just weren’t the same back in them olden-times. Buy it, enjoy its power, and be bloody careful!Review updated in a few places to reflect corrections to the listing of 3 years ago and this HS 600 seems only to be sold through third party sellers now and the price has increased.

This is not a small piece of kit. It is very impressive. Cuts clean and sharp through everything so far.Cutting 4×2 into firrings was a doddle and saved me £95.Capable of 101mm of material.Quite heavy for anyone just looking to do a bit of DIY.

I bought this saw as a replacement for my 15 year old Makita 5103R, which was showing signs of it’s age. When ordering, I was rather sceptical as to whether this saw would match up in quality to a direct replacement, at some £300 more expensive. My fears were unfounded; this tool is reassuringly heavy, solidly constructed, and has high quality components throughout. The balance and ergonomics are very good, and even at 5’6″ / 9st I found the saw to be controllable and easy to direct. A word of caution though- the kick on start up is quite severe, I would caution any new user to practice a good few times on some scrap to give their shoulders/brain opportunity to get acquainted with the tool’s start-up behaviour.I’ve now ripped up quite a few 3″x 5″ railway timbers and a couple of 7″ x7″ oak beams and this saw gave me that lovely feeling you get when you’ve done a neat job.A minor criticism- the trigger button is recessed somewhat, making it difficult to actuate while wearing thick gloves. In summary, a quality tool. Recommended. I’ve never regretted buying Makita.

A fantastic piece of kit, bought for cutting railway sleepers in one pass.Does the job fantastically, but needs some careful initial setting up to cut square.Treat with utmost respect, because when this thing kicks back it’s deadly.

Great bit of kit. I purchased to use for a job. Raised flower beds using sleepers. This saw cuts 100mm so gives a lovely clean cut for sleepers.Powerful and surprisingly quite. Definitely good enough for a professional finish. Be warned its a large saw.
