I have had a battery powered grinder before from another brand and it was pants. The lack of torque just meant it bogged down almost immediately making it useless in practice. Honestly I wasn’t going to bother buying another cordless grinder but when I saw this on offer – and being a user of Ryobi tools – I gave in and tried again.First off I will say that I have loads of Ryobi stuff going back ten years. I started buying their tools when they first changed to the lime green colour because they were well priced and did the job. Clearly made to that lower price nevertheless they proved to be very robust and the batteries utterly superb. I have spend ten solid years renovating a house including digging out under it and putting on another floor using Ryobi tools with little care at all. So far none have broken despite the abuse. And one battery I bought eight years ago has just carked it despite it having been charged hundreds and hundreds of times. Damned impressive.Since those first two drill/drivers I bought made with hard shiny plastic Ryobi have steadily pushed the quality upwards. My latest drills are easily as good as the trade stuff like DeWalt and Milwaukee. In fact Ryobi and Milwaukee are owned and made by the same Hong Kong company, Techtronic Industries in their own facilities. And of course they have different internal parts. Not…Of course a couple of things to note with the increased quality. The weight has gone up as well as the price.Anyway, this tool is super well made, has high quality materials in its case and is easy to hold given the handle design. The overmoulded rubber grips are very good indeed and the side handle can be mounted on either side for lefties or righties. It’s vibration isolating as well. However I have a couple of things to note. Firstly my day job is a marine Chief Engineer and as such using metal working tools specifically grinders is a daily thing on a ship. Welders will also know this but the handle which is always supplied is never used by ‘professionals’ – ever. Not once in any shipyard or welding shop have I seen a small grinder with a handle fitted. Same on a ship. They are just annoying and get in the way.The other thing is that the power switch is a ‘dead-man’ one. In other words you have to keep it depressed to keep the grinder going which, is a pain. If you are using a grinder in the perfect position as shown in the advertising bumph where it’s at bench height and you are pressing down then fine. However, these sized grinders are used for working in all sorts of positions and that means you might have to move your hands away from the switch. That’s why most grinders don’t have a dead man but instead a locked on power switch. This grinder being battery type is, one would have thought even more likely to be used for convenience of location thus the hold on switch even more irritating.Bottom line is that if I’d known the switch could not be locked in place I’d probably not have bought it despite it’s other qualities.Putting that aside in use this is excellent. It didn’t bog down at all and the battery I used 4Ahr lasted well and provided plenty of power. It is a bit larger than a mains unit but is well balanced and the handle part being slimmer makes it easy to hold.Overall this would have been a winner had it not been for the dead man switch.

Needed a angle grinder to do small metal work jobs and this Ryobi grinder more than fitted the bill. A really great tool.

I was attracted to this by one of the regular emails from Amazon which, if I’m honest, often get ignored.Buying it as a set gives a very substantial saving over buying the component parts separately. If looking at alternatives make sure that they include a battery and charger, potentially £80 if you buy them separately. I like the concept of the 18V ONE + because, if travelling, you can share batteries between tools of the same range, giving flexibility and saving weight and space. It seems to be a quality product, easy to use and with minimal vibration unlike some grinders whose vibrations make them unpleasant to use. While ear protection is recommended, it seems quieter than many others. The charger gives clear battery status and a reasonably short recharge timeFor a cordless tool it has a decent endurance but the battery life is finite , as on all cordless tools, so my next purchase will be the 5Ah battery, although the price of a 5Ah battery is nearly as much as the complete set!

Great value

Nice compact size
It contains the disk changing tool in the handle so you don’t have to look around for it. It takes my existing 18v battery. It’s very handy to use outside because I don’t have to string power cords.
